A view of the Coquille Valley where Laura and Brian grew up
Laura and Brian were both raised in the rural forestry and ranching community of
Myrtle Point, Oregon. Brian’s family owned a 600-acre cattle operation, and Laura
was girl with a horse in search of a ranch.
Laura (Nunan) Lillie has over 20 years of horse experience that encompasses a
vast array of disciplines: working ranch riding, starting colts, english, western,
eventing exercising race horses, and driving. Laura grew up on horses and around
ranching. Her main goal in life was to be the best horseman she could. In her
teens Laura rode for neighboring ranchers, competed in a variety of disciplines,
and started training a few horses as opportunity arose.
After graduating high school Laura spent time in Australia and the South Pacific
island Vanuatu, worked on a ranch in Wyoming, and returned to Oregon to earn a
bachelor’s degree in Biology.
She married Brian Lillie in a hayfield riding in on horseback of course. Soon after,
they started Stampede Mountain Ranch, a trail riding facility on the Lillie’s
parents’ 600-acre working cattle ranch. Here they introduced riders of all abilities
and ages to the joys of riding in a working ranch atmosphere. After life’s twists
and turns found them settling down in Monroe, OR Laura and Brian switched
their focus to giving lessons, training, and Laura’s long time dream of breeding
quarter horses.
Laura soon became acquainted with the philosophies and methods of the Vaquero
Style of Natural Horsemanship taught by Ray Hunt. Then she started riding with
Ricky Quinn and Buck Brannaman. These associations with the masters of horse
psychology have made a lasting impression on Laura’s approach to handling all
types of horses.
